Antique Handmade Gendje Long Wool Rug with Diagonal Stripes, Ca 1880
Tasteful and restrained, this antique rug from the Ganja or 'Gendje' region of central Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus, features a field with diagonal rows of tiny shrubs on blue and ivory, almost as in a formal garden. Vividly saturated natural dyes enhance the all-wool fibers of this rug to vibrate with an uncommon intensity, in spite of the restrained graphics. The field is surrounded by a wide, red border filled with large, exaggerated floral motifs. The entire effect is one of a garden path, bursting with flowers. In excellent condition, with a very supple handle.
