Exceptional Antique Northwest Persian Bidjar Rug, Late 19th Century
There is a certain element of cheerfulness as well as a powerful presence to this dazzling Bidjar rug with its softly rendered blossoms all-over a strikingly vivid red field. These blossoms, big and small, featured in beautifully restrained and soft blue, pink, green, yellow as well as dark indigo bring sheer joyfulness to the design. The contrast between their calming, subtle colors and the boldness of the red background makes the rug at once relaxing and stimulating and gives it immense vibrancy, not unlike that of an invigorated meadow in spring which it probably evokes. The alternating inner and outer borders continue the effect of the same contrast between a soft blue and a bold red, while the main border echoes the bigger blossoms in the field, albeit in more elongated form, on a more somber looking dark indigo, enhancing the emphasis on the vividness that it frames.
