This powerful Antique Karabagh Rug is a robust and geometrically rich tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to the late 19th century. Measuring 122 x 232 cm (approx. 4'0" x 7'7"), its elongated format and deeply saturated design make it a commanding and historically significant art piece.
The central field features a deep, earthy dark brown/black (abrash) ground, which is dominated by a column of three large, boldly stepped geometric medallions. These monumental motifs feature striking color blocks of vivid madder red and turquoise/teal blue, rendered with complex internal cruciform and latch-hook details. The field is densely populated with small tribal filler motifs, including highly stylized animal and figure forms, adding a unique narrative quality typical of nomadic weaving.
The composition is framed by an elaborate border system, featuring a wide main border of repetitive, multi-colored geometric star guls set against a cream/ivory ground, providing strong visual contrast. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, enduring natural dyes, this rug embodies the primitive strength and cultural richness of the Karabagh/Kazak tradition.
