This powerful Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug is a robust and geometrically dominant tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to circa 1880. Measuring 143 x 247 cm (approx. 4'8" x 8'1"), its versatile size and intense, bold design make it a commanding focal point for any collector or sophisticated interior.
The central field features a deep indigo/navy blue ground, which is dominated by a vertical column of three large, distinct geometric medallions. These monumental motifs are rendered in striking color blocks of madder red, ivory, and blue, defined by prominent angular stepped outlines and elaborate latch-hook extensions. The field is filled with small, archaic geometric figures and stylized guls, adding complexity to the dark ground. The bold scale of the motifs and the stark contrast against the deep blue field are hallmarks of the Kazak style.
The composition is framed by an exceptionally wide and complex border system. The main border, set against a crisp cream/ivory ground, showcases repeating, large geometric cross and star motifs, providing a stunning visual contrast to the central intensity. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a characteristically thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, saturated natural dyes, this rug is presented in Well Preserved Original Condition, showcasing both the artistic strength and longevity of 19th-century Caucasus weaving.
