Antique North East Caucasian "Kuba" pile rug from the 19th century. It features an unusual Kilim design with strong graphic effect leaning on the starkness of its geometric elements and the richness of its individual colors.
Two full and one half medallions made up of angular floral stems, that seem to spring from the background, run across the field of this Kuba rug in strong contrasting colors of deep red, deep navy blue and cream. The angular, box-shaped frames of the medallions with their intricately stepped edges lend a heightened geometric impact to the overall design. Along the same axis are several similar stepped frames on a much smaller scale with 'hands on hips' motifs inside them, in a variety of yet more strong colors including teal, cream, light yellow, navy blue and deep red. The outer border is made up of even more 'hands on hips' motifs in simpler form beautifully reinterpreting what is on the field with balance and a subtle sense of symmetry against a cream background.
The rug is hand-knotted with wool on wool foundation. It is in very good condition and professionally cleaned.
