An exuberant and whimsical antique Caucasian Gendje rug from the 1870s featuring a clear and yet complex and meticulously woven design. The field is decorated with diagonal stripes that are each filled with several hooked wheel of life motifs and finished with dainty ‘barber-pole’ outlining, creating an unmistakably cheerful and expressive character. The deft use of color, including celadon green, madder red, saffron, cerulean blue, cream and dark brown, in all its richness and variety lends immense vibrancy to the overall feel. The attention paid to the smallest detail by the highly accomplished artisans is simply breathtaking.
The beautiful diversity and charming playfulness of the design can also be seen in the tri-partite border, with delicate budding flower motifs on the inner and outer bands and richly colored ram’s horn motifs on the main border.
The rug was handmade with medium wool pile on wool foundation. It is in very good original condition and professionally cleaned.
