Antique Turkish Ghiordes 'Gordes' Prayer Rug, Ca 1880
An antique Turkish Ghiordes prayer rug hand-knotted in 1880s in Gordes of Western Turkey, which was once a famous rug making centre with its own well-defined classical aesthetic. This elegant Ghiordes prayer rug is part of the same tradition of rug-making in which graceful, intricate botanical motifs and florals are very prominent in a layered, sophisticated color scheme. The beautiful large border with its subtle, masterful gradations from bright chartreuse to soft light green to sage green as well as the more pastel tones of terra-cotta red, rose pink and powder blue of the very finely drawn rosettes and palmettes is simply a delight to look at. The use of architectural pillars on the plain beige field, the very decorative spandrels in powder blue and the angular, slightly stepped niche contribute to the timeless elegance of this prayer rug.The rug is finely hand-knotted with even medium wool pile on wool foundation. It is in very good condition and professionally cleaned.
