This rare Antique Karabagh Kazak Rug is an exceptional and historically early tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to circa 1860. Measuring 120 x 209 cm (approx. 3'11" x 6'10"), its medium size and unique, detailed design make it an outstanding collector's piece and a vibrant focal point.
The central field features a vertical arrangement of panels characterized by alternating colors of deep navy blue and madder red. Within these vertical bands are repeated, stylized boteh (or pine cone) motifs and geometric forms, creating a visually striking 'striped' effect. This organized, dense pattern is highly characteristic of the more refined weaving centers in the Karabagh region.
The field is framed by an elaborate system of multiple guard bands, including a wide main border filled with dense, repetitive latch-hook guls and stylized floral motifs in contrasting cream, teal, and red. The robust knotting, combined with the subtle complexity of the design, highlights the superior quality of the mid-19th-century weaving. Woven from high-quality hand-spun wool and colored exclusively with deep, nuanced natural dyes, this rug offers impressive historical depth.
